Jimmy plays football for his University team and many female students are attracted to him, but he only pays attention to one: his girlfriend, Christine. At the moment, he’s very worried that she might not want to remain in a relationship with him.
Jimmy knows his only assets are superficial, like his macho persona, and he can't truly understand why such a beautiful and talented girl as Christine would fall for him.
Without speaking to the newly reconciled Shinji and his mother, Jimmy leaves quietly and telephones Christine from his room.
Hi, it's me. Are you busy now? Can I see you tonight?
There’s a football club party. I can drive you to your apartment after if you go.
There’s a brief silence on the other end of the line, then:
I can see you tonight, but I don't want to go to the football party. I don't know anybody and it was boring last time. But I have something to ask your father; it's about the future.
So can I come over?
Jimmy's voice got trembles with excitement as he replies:
Future? You mean our future? That’s great! Forget about the party!
I'll call my Dad right now and ask if he’s free tonight. I’ll ask Mom, too!
Christine interrupts:
Wait a minute! I didn't mean that. I meant my future employment.
I told you before…but I guess you don't remember. I was wondering if your father could introduce me to somebody since he has so many connections. Besides, we aren’t kids. Why would we have to consult with your parents about our future?
Feeling flushed and sweaty from embarrassment, Jimmy speaks trying to regain his cool:
That was a joke. I know what you meant. To tell you the truth, I already spoke to my Dad about the whole thing. But, come to my house tonight anyway. My Dad should be home by 9. I’ll see you tonight.
I love you.
Christine replies, quietly relieved:
I love you too.
Feeling miserable, Jimmy hangs up. After a brief moment of running the conversation back over in his mind, he jumps as he makes a realization. Christine has never asked to be introduced to jimmy’s dad, not surprising as that kind of thing is almost against her nature.
So why now does she want to come to the house? Could it be because she wants to see Shinji?
