Hi, Jimmy. I appreciate you relaying my request to your Dad. I want to get a job at a newspaper in the future, but for now I’d like to start working part-time to prepare myself. I was wondering if your Dad could introduce me to someone he knows.
Jimmy’s Dad, Michael, knows a lot of people. Hearing of Christine’s request from Jimmy, Michael feels slightly uneasy about Jimmy and Christine’s relationship. Christine seems too clever for Jimmy. Michael says:
The editor of the Vancouver Sun is my friend. I could ask him. By the way, what area are you interested in?
Re-crossing her slender, long legs, Christine replies. Her cheeks are flushing.
I am interested in women’s issues at the moment. Using the concept ‘gender-free’, I would like to advocate women’s liberation in the world, then, I would like to dedicate myself to human liberation beyond gender through journalism.
Hearing Christine’s confident speech, Michael feels a momentary urge to hire her as one of his staff. At the same time, he wonders more and more why this talented person is going out with his own son.
Jimmy, on the other hand, while listening to their rapidly advancing talk, can’t help feeling left behind. Thinking he has to say something to prevent his existence from being ignored, he says:
Christine that is a good plan. I agree with you. If you want to tackle women’s liberation in the world, why don’t you ask Shinji about women’s issues in Japan? I don’t know if Shinji knows anything about such an intellectual issue, though.
Jimmy knows it is a mistake as soon as he speaks, but it is too late. Christine says to Jimmy:
That’s a great idea! I’d really like to talk to Shinji. Jimmy, can you please call Shinji?
