＜前回のあらすじ＞
金曜の午後に急ぎの仕事が入った。上司は早引けしてすべてをサラに一任。サラを助けて残業することにしたヒロミちゃんに、「チャンスはいつくるかわからない」とサラが言い、黒い瞳をギラリと燃やした。

午後8時、広々としたプライスファイヤー会計会社のオフィスは水を打ったように静まり返っている。ガラス張りの会議室にあるマホガニーの巨大なテーブルの上に書類が散乱し、サラとヒロミが仕事に没頭している。

それから2時間、やっと仕事が完了し、50ページを超える書類をお客にFAXとEメールした後で二人はオフィスを出た。二人のお腹が空腹で同時に鳴った。二人は顔を見合わせて笑い、近くのホテルのレストランで食事をすることにした。

オーダーを済まし、まずはビールで乾杯すると、ヒロミちゃんに長かった一日がよみがえってきた。一息ついたサラは、今までよりずっと親しげムードだ。

ヒロミちゃんには、サラの言っている意味がよくわからなかった。

サラの説明は、ヒロミちゃんの想像を何倍も超えたものだった！

ヒロミちゃんは北米の敏腕キャリアウーマンを目の当たりにした気がした。北米のビジネス世界は、日本のように>合議制ではなく、部署の責任者が自分で決断すると聞いていたが、責任者の下で働く人も、出世を目指して自分で決断しているのだ。

ヒロミちゃんは、日本で働いたこともあるデイビッドの言葉を思い出していた。 “日本は団体戦で。こちらは個人戦。こちらでは、誰もが個人として成功する機会を求めている”

ヒロミちゃんの目に、サラが、獲物を狙うしなやかで敏捷な動物のように映った。（続く）

At 8 pm silence falls over the spacious office of ‘Price Fire Accounting Firm’. A huge mahogany table in the meeting room, surrounded by glass walls, is covered with scattered documents. There, Sarah and Hiromi are deeply engaged in their work.

Two hours pass and the work is finally done. They fax and email over 50 pages of documents to their client and walk out of the office. Their hungry stomachs rumble simultaneously. They look at each other and laugh, and decide to eat at a nearby hotel-restaurant.

After the two girls order their food and make a toast with beer, thoughts from the long day begin coming back to Hiromi. Meanwhile Sarah, who has settled after a moment of discomfort, appears to be friendlier than ever.

Hiromi can’t understand exactly what Sarah is speaking about.

Sarah’s answer is not one Hiromi expects.

Hiromi feels she is witnessing a shrewd North-American businesswoman before her own eyes. She knows unlike in Japan, where decisions are made by the group, managersmake decisions by themselves in North America. But people under managers make their own decisions to succeed as well.

Hiromi remembers David’s theory, learned during his work experience in Japan. “Japan is like a team event. North America is a single’s event. Here, everybody is looking for his own personal success”

Hiromi sees a wild animal looking for prey in Sarah. (To be continued)
