The vocabulary in “Imagine” is easy, even junior high school students could understand it. So, why couldn’t I understand it until now?
I’ve had a similar experience. I think everybody can find some artists that are easy to understand. If you listen to many different songs by these artists and give your ears practice, you will gradually become able to understand other artists as well. Generally speaking, it’s easier to work with music that doesn’t have a noisy band, so the vocals can be heard clearly.
You’ll get used to different accents. For example, blues sung by Black musicians can be very difficult to understand at first, but you may become hooked on it as you grow to understand the unique accent.
It seems like there isn’t any Japanese pop or rock music that has profound meanings like “Imagine” does. I wonder why.
